Dynamic biopharmaceutical player Biocon is the model of a successful research-based life sciences company. While not as big as some of the major Indian generics manufacturers, the company is not short on innovation. With a focus on biosimilars and biologics, it is a leader in fields including insulins and statins. The company’s R&D spend is greater than 10% of its revenue, and a team of 11 IP professionals looks after a portfolio that includes nearly 1,000 granted patents and 450 trademarks. The emphasis on R&D and patents comes right from the top. Chairman and managing director Kiran Mazumdar-Shah has said: “India Inc must learn to play the patenting game and beat global competitors without bending the rules. It is only through a concerted strategy of building high-value intellectual property through the leveraging of India’s cost and skill base that we can gain market leadership.”
