Industrial Technology Research Institute
Headquarters: Hsinchu, Taiwan
Industry sector: R&D institute
The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is the cradle of Taiwan’s high-technology industry – over 200 enterprises can trace their origins back to ITRI, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics Corporation two of its most successful offspring. Over the years ITRI has continued to evolve to reflect market needs: from supporting industries at the R&D level in the past, it now adopts a market-driven approach to identify and develop commercially viable new technologies before transferring them to companies. Prodigious R&D activity produces about five patents per day, on average. As the patent wars in the tech space intensify, ITRI also helps domestic companies facing infringement suits overseas by transferring relevant patents to them to assert. With a patent arsenal that currently stands some 20,000 strong, it is also promoting the establishment of an IP fund that would acquire further useful patents for defensive use.
