Founded at the dawn of the new millennium, the NASDAQ-listed Baidu marries an advanced technological structure with sterling IP management. The fact that it has retained its position at the pinnacle of China’s search engine market in the face of intense competition is testament to its strength and solid IP foundations. Baidu has also expanded its horizons over the years and now offers more than 55 multimedia services; most recently, it released a low-cost smartphone in May 2012. While in the past the company has come under heavy fire over illegal downloading on its platform, it recently silenced its critics by inking ground-breaking licensing agreements with some of the world’s leading record companies.
